Understanding the Point System in Texas

The state's point system works as follows:

  • Two points- For ordinary moving violations
  • Three points- For moving violations that occurred during an accident

If you acquire four or more traffic tickets in a 12-month period or seven or more traffic tickets in a 24-month period, your license will be suspended. An automatic surcharge will be assessed, if you are convicted of operating a vehicle without a license, driving without insurance, or DWI. If you fail to pay the surcharge, your license will be suspended. If you fail to pay fees for not paying off a traffic ticket in a timely manner, your driver's license cannot be renewed. You can also have your driver's license suspended for a drug conviction. If you drive with a suspended or invalid license, this is a misdemeanor offense that can result in fines, a longer suspension period and jail time.

If you received a notice that your license is going to be suspended, you need to retain legal representation immediately. At Berlof & Newton, P.C. we can help you contest the suspension at a Driver License Suspension Hearing. You only have 20 days from the date you receive your notice to request a hearing.
